GCI's Sponsorship Commitment for the 2002 Iditarod Race

Description of GCI's Iditarod Sponsorship:
On Saturday, March 2, at 10 a.m., the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins on Fourth Avenue in Anchorage. About 10 days later the winner will cross the finish line on Front Street in downtown Nome. In between, the world will follow the race as it winds through 1,100 miles of wilderness, over mountain ranges, down frozen rivers and past some of the most rugged terrain on earth.

As the "official communications sponsor" GCI contributes $200,000 in cash and services, and is once again a Presenting Level Sponsor. As a supporter of the race GCI helps the world follow the race by supplying a communication network that gathers information from the trail and distributes it globally through various media.

For this year's race, GCI will set up several webcams along the Iditarod trail for viewers from all over the state, country and world to watch the Iditarod live via the internet at www.iditarod.com.

GCI will be presenting a live webcast from the Iditarod banquet, start and finish of the race. You'll be able to view the Iditarod Musher's Banquet live on Thursday, February 28, starting at 6 p.m. AST, the race start in Anchorage on March 2, and experience the anticipation of the race finish live from Nome via the internet at www.iditarod.com.

GCI is Sponsoring Musher Mike Williams for the 2002 Race:
For this year's race, GCI is sponsoring Mike Williams during the 2002 Iditarod race:
Mike Williams (Akiak) was born in 1952 and graduated from Chemewa High School in Salem, Oregon. He says he is a life long dog musher and wanted to run the Iditarod since it began in 1973. He finally realized that dream when he ran in 1992. "My main reason for running Iditarod is to promote sobriety, quality education and healthy families, FASD/FAE prevention. I have seen success in many villages," Mike says. Mike has his original Akiak dog bloodline interbred with dogs from George Attla, Susan Butcher, Charlie Boulding, the Huntingtons and Erharts. He received the Most Inspirational award in 1992. In 1992, he finished 44th. In 1993, he finished 31st. In 1994, he finished 28th. In 1997, he finished 18th. In 1998, he finished 23rd.
