Home Smoke Alarms and Other Fire Detection And Alarm Equipment

Description: Home Smoke Alarms and Other Fire Detection And Alarm Equipment.This is one of a series of white papers developed by the Public/Private Fire Safety Council outlining major strategies for reducing the annual death toll from residential fires, specifically home fires. The Public/Private Fire Safety Council is a 16-member council of federal agencies and non-government organizations, created to develop a coordinated national effort to eliminate residential fire deaths by the year 2020.

Specific Programs/Strategies: Available research indicates that programs are more successful if smoke alarm distribution is supplemented by direct installation, and combined with supporting education and scheduled follow-up visits. Also important, program evaluations must be designed to refine program features as needed and demonstrate program effectiveness.

Kids Don't Float (KDF)

Description: Kids Don't Float (KDF) is a statewide injury prevention program that was developed to address Alaska's high child and youth drowning rate. In a collaborative effort between several state and federal agencies, organizations and local grass-roots sponsors, Kids Don't Float now includes a life jacket loaner board component and an educational component.

Drowning Interventions Best Practices

Description: Drowning Interventions Best Practices. Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center is one of 12 injury-control centers supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the country, affiliated with the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Description: CDC Compendium of Effective Fall Interventions: What Works for Community-Dwelling Older Adults, 2nd Edition This compendium of interventions is designed for public health practitioners and community-based organizations, to help them address the problem of falls among older adults.

Specific Programs/Strategies: 22 scientifically tested and proven interventions are described with relevant details about these interventions for organizations who want to implement fall prevention programs.

Health Communication Campaigns

Description: Health Communication Campaigns that Include Mass Media & Health-Related Product Distribution: Interventions that combine two components to increase the appropriate, repeated use of evidence-based, health-related products.

Specific Programs/Strategies: A health communication campaign uses messages to increase awareness of, demand for, and appropriate use of the product. Messages must be delivered through multiple channels, one of which is mass media, to provide multiple opportunities for exposure; and distribution of a health-related product, free of charge or at a reduced price; to reduce cost, access, and convenience-related barriers among targeted users. The specific behaviors promoted in the included studies were the use of products that facilitate health promoting behaviors; facilitate cessation of harmful behaviors; or protect against behavior-related disease or injury.
