OCS program offers clothing discounts for foster youth
By Elaine Rich, OCS Social Services Program Coordinator
It is hard to believe that the start of a new school year has already begun in most communities across the state. I would like to take this opportunity to inform resource families, foster care providers, and community partners about the FosterWear program, which is a valuable resource to help foster youth obtain the clothing they need at discounted prices.
The Office of Children’s Services, Facing Foster Care in Alaska, and state Rep. Les Gara teamed up to bring this idea to fruition. Many local and national businesses provide a discount on clothing for foster youth under this plan. Each retailer offers different discounts or has implemented a process to receive a discount. In order to qualify for the discounts, individuals must provide proof of being a current, active foster care provider.
Over the coming months, OCS will ask other Alaska stores to join in the program. We hope this expansion will make a difference in the lives of Alaska’s foster youth.
For more information about the FosterWear program, please contact an OCS case worker or licensing worker. If you know a retailer that may be interested in offering a clothing discount to foster youth, please contact Elaine Rich at 907-465-2795.
