Commissioner Jay Livey (left) and George Buhite , Director of the Division of Juvenile Justice (right) will host a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Kenai Peninsula Youth Facility at 1:00 p.m. on May 31, 2002. The event will be held at 405 Marathon Road in Kenai. Media are invited to attend.
This event marks the beginning of facility construction, which is scheduled for completion in February, 2003. When completed, the youth facility will serve as a central booking site for juvenile offenders on the Kenai Peninsula and provide emergency and pretrial detention for up to 10 male or female youth. The facility will also house office and interview space for juvenile probation officers working with the youth, their families and community agencies. On-site education for youth detained in the facility will be provided through the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District.

Development of local juvenile detention capacity will eliminate the need to transport area youth to Anchorage for emergency and pretrial detention. It will facilitate quicker resolution of juvenile delinquency cases and allow youth detained in the facility to maintain better linkages with their families and support services in their communities.
G&S Construction of Soldotna will construct the $5.0 million facility based on a design by ECI/Hyer, project consultants.
