FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 30, 2002

Revised regulations benefit grantees and people they serve

New grant regulations streamline process, reduce paperwork

New regulations that streamline the grant application process and grant administration became effective July 21, 2002. The Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) provides a broad array of health and human services to the people of Alaska through more than 60 grants to non-profit service agencies and municipalities. Services these agencies provide include alcohol treatment, delinquency prevention and youth courts, adoption support, tuberculosis testing and treatment, and much more.

"Changing the Department's grant regulations was consistently listed as one of the highest priorities for grant reform and this recommendation has been fully implemented," Commissioner Jay Livey said. "DHSS has a firm commitment to the delivery of responsive and efficient community-based services." An 18-month project assessed changes over the last twenty years when the basic framework for the grant processes was developed.
Livey thanked grantees, providers, the general public, and department staff who collaborated to make recommendations and help establish a streamlined and efficient process. "Many people worked on the new regulations and the quality of their efforts and willingness to serve have resulted in a benefit to the grant agencies and the consumers they serve," he said.
Training for grant management and the grant application process will be provided to smooth the transition from the old to the new regulations. Additional training on other topics will be added later.
