Anchorage, Alaska - - - On Thursday, April 17, Senator Lisa Murkowski is hosting a press conference and informational briefing about severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and issues surrounding SARS and Alaska. The Alaska Dept. of Health & Social Services, Division of Public Health (DPH) Director Doug Bruce and Section of Epidemiology Chief Dr. John Middaugh will participate as speakers with the Senator. Also scheduled to speak are Dr. Jay Butler from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Arctic Investigations Program in Anchorage and Dr. Bruce Chandler, medical officer for the Municipality of Anchorage / Department of Health and Human Services.
“Senator Murkowski is a great advocate for public health issues for Alaska and the rest of the country,” said DPH Director Doug Bruce. “It is wonderful that she has set this time aside during her trip here to bring these speakers together and talk with us about a topic of such great concern to the state. Although we have not had any SARS cases in Alaska, we are prepared to respond to any cases that should arrive here and with the Senator’s support, our health care providers and the public will now be even more informed and prepared.”
Health care providers and others interested in SARS issues are invited to attend. The briefing will be held in the east auditorium at Providence Alaska Medical Center, 1:30 – 3:00pm, Thursday, April 17.
