Alaska Governor Frank H. Murkowski has issued an Executive Proclamation designating September 2003 as Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month and encouraging all citizens to support men, women and youths who are in substance abuse recovery and treatment, and their families. “Substance abuse and co-occurring mental disorders and physical illnesses affect thousands of Alaskans of all ages, races and ethnic backgrounds in all communities,” Governor Murkowski said. “This month, I urge you to take the time to encourage family and friends, one by one, who have taken steps to recovery. Your support makes a tremendous difference.”

“Thousands of health care providers have dedicated their lives to assisting individuals and families through the recovery process and to educating the public about alcoholism, drug dependence, co-occurring disorders, and treatment,” Joel Gilbertson, Alaska Dept. of Health & Social Services Commissioner said. “This month we also honor their good work to help fellow Alaskans overcome the burdens of alcoholism and drug addiction.”

For those who are suffering from an alcohol or other drug addiction, William Hogan, the Director of the Division of Behavioral Health, encourages them to celebrate recovery month by taking a first step towards their own recovery. According to Director Hogan, “There are likely people in your faith community, your family, your workplace and answering help line calls who would help you -all you need to do is ask-recovery is available to all”.
