The National Association of Social Work Alaska Chapter proudly announces its 17th Annual Conference, to be held October 1-3, 2003 at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage. Over two hundred social workers employed in every corner of the state and allied professionals including psychologists, licensed marriage and family therapists, counselors, case managers and nurses will attend the Conference.
The theme of the NASW conference is “The Power of Stories: Narratives of Hope, Courage and Change”. Internationally renowned storyteller, social worker and consultant on child welfare, Naomi Haines Griffith will open the conference Wednesday October 1st with a keynote address titled “Renewing our Commitment.” A well-known storyteller and family systems specialist, Ms. Griffith uses humor and her own experiences to challenge and inspire audiences. She will offer a plenary session Wednesday on “Supervision as Leadership.”
David Epston will present a full day plenary session Thursday October 2nd “The Power of Stories: Narratives of Hope, Courage and Change” and a full day clinical session on Narrative Therapy methods Friday October 3rd. Epston is recognized worldwide as a co-founder of the Narrative Therapy movement. A well published author and social worker, he is co-director of the Family Therapy Centre in New Zealand.
The NASW Conference will also include concurrent sessions on Friday, October 3rd on Elder Care and Ethics and a cross cultural workshop on Tolerance: Ending Racism.
Among the distinguished speakers addressing the conference this year include an opening address by Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, presentations by social workers include the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services Division of Behavioral Health Services Director Bill Hogan, the new Office of Children’s Services Deputy Commission Marcia Kennai, political strategist Kate Coyne-McCoy and University of Alaska Vice President for Health Karen Perdue.
