Governor Declares Alaska Influenza Vaccination Week
Flu shots encouraged for seniors, children, and others concerned about influenza

(Juneau) – Governor Frank Murkowski released today an executive proclamation declaring October 20-24, 2003 as Influenza Vaccination Week in Alaska. The proclamation comes at the height of the influenza vaccination season and encourages everyone in Alaska to get a flu shot to be protected from the influenza virus.
According to the proclamation, “People 65 years of age and older, people of any age with chronic medical conditions, and children 6-23 months of age are at substantially increased risk for influenza-related hospitalizations. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Family Physicians encourage vaccination in these groups when feasible.”
Health officials also highly recommend flu shots for health care workers, others in close contact with someone at high risk for complications from influenza (such as seniors and children), and emergency responders. Influenza vaccination is also recommended for anyone who wants to be protected from the flu, regardless of his or her risk status.
Persons wishing to get a flu shot should contact their health care provider or their public health clinic.
