( Juneau, Alaska) -- The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, Sections of Epidemiology and Public Health Nursing will be conducting tuberculosis (TB) outreach during the week of April 11 through 15, 2005. A team from Public Health Nursing and Epidemiology will provide free TB screening at:

Bethel Health Center
1490 Chief Eddie Hoffman Highway
April 11 through April 15, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A team will also be located at:

Bethel City Hall, Council Chambers
300 Chief Eddie Hoffman Highway
April 11 through April 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Due to recent TB activity in Bethel, a focused effort is being made to locate individuals who may have come in contact with tuberculosis.

Exposure to tuberculosis can be determined by placing a TB skin test or, if an individual has an old history of TB exposure, a simple questionnaire. Symptoms of TB disease may include persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fever, fatigue, or coughing up blood. With timely diagnosis and the proper the medical treatment, TB is a curable disease.
