( Anchorage) – Standing Masters William Hitchcock and Lucinda McBurney opened their courtrooms today to recognize Governor Frank H. Murkowski’s Adoption Awareness Month proclamation at the Anchorage Courthouse. Several children were adopted by families and the Governor’s proclamation was read by Travis Erickson from the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS), Office of Children’s Services (OCS).

“Many families will be adopting children who have been in custody of the Office of Children’s Services during this special event,” OCS Deputy Commissioner Tammy Sandoval said. “Volunteers from throughout the community made this day extra special for all the children and families involved.”

Each family adopting children had their own private hearing. Youth for Christ volunteers decorated the courtrooms and provided refreshments and a gift for each child and family. Families were also given a compact disc with photographs taken during the adoption hearing. Additionally, a local quilting group made and provided quilted “coloring bags” that held individual crayons and pages for coloring.

“Finding children permanent homes with good families is an outcome we want to achieve,” Sandoval said. “This is great day for everyone involved.”
