( Fairbanks, Alaska) – Governor Frank H. Murkowski and Alaska Department of Health and Social Services Commissioner Karleen Jackson today presented $20,000 to the Fairbanks Community Food Bank at their warehouse facility to support their Thanksgiving food distribution effort.

“This is the greatest time of year for food distribution for the Fairbanks Community Food Bank,” Governor Murkowski said. “ Our contribution will help Fairbanks Community Food Bank provide food for the Thanksgiving holiday for many families in Fairbanks and assist in combating hunger in Alaska during this time of significant need.”

Governor Murkowski said that the $20,000 check he presented to Fairbanks Community Food Bank would help support the Fairbanks Thanksgiving holiday effort. The Fairbanks Community Food Bank expects to serve up to 1,500 families/households for the Thanksgiving holiday, distributing about 40,000 pounds of food on Nov. 23. The Food Bank is cooperating with the Salvation Army, First Presbyterian Church in Fairbanks and Lord of Life Lutheran Church in North Pole for the food distribution effort.

“Alaskans can make a positive difference in the lives of our neighbors and fellow Alaskans if we encourage and support creative community-based activities that provide for individuals and families most in need of help. Fairbanks Community Food Bank represents a great collaborative effort, ” Commissioner Jackson said. “We are pleased to support his effort and encourage others in the community to participate, as well.”

Fairbanks Community Food Bank collects and redistributes donated food to individuals and agencies. Food donations are received from the local community and about 100 commercial vendors and distributed through many programs including Food Boxes, Bone Builders, and Agency Shopping.
